Why have the 0870 changes happened?

Consumer groups, like ‘say no to 0870’ have campaigned for a reduction in cost and charges to call these numbers and alternatives. Ofcom announced a review of 0870, 0845, 0871 numbers a few years ago. The changes should have come in to affect early in 2008, but due to technical issues this was a delayed. However during this period many businesses have implemented alternative numbers migrating from 0870 to 0844, 0845 or 0871. BT and other Telco’s now include calls to 0870 And 0845 in their calling plans at no extra cost or charges. It is also likely that mobile operators will soon start including calls to 0845, 0844 and 0870 in their packages, so no extra charges or cost to call these numbers.

Going forward callers will benefit from either free calls to 0870 and 0845 or reduced cost to call them. For business that use 0870 it is important to choose the right alternative be it 0844, 0845 or 0871.
